A sitting Buddha makes for a peaceful image. And yet Buddhism feels obscure and out of reach for most people. How do we go from a sitting Buddha to being truly at peace? Why is cultivating wholesome thoughts and emotions so important to Buddhists? How does this translate into a daily practice?
Buddhist meditation is a format for cultivating awareness, calm, and wisdom. It requires a set-aside time of about 20 minutes each day. This is how we learn to realize the Buddha’s insights. There are ways to describe what Buddhist meditation is and isn’t. Both help.

Beth Lauderdale, MA, is passionate about the intersection of Buddhist and Christian contemplation practices. After moving to Durham, North Carolina she offered the Morrisville Meditation Meetup from 2016-2024. She completed the Dedicated Practitioners Program (DPP6) at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, CA in 2019 and is a member of the Society for Buddhist-Christian Studies. In 2023 she began ongoing Pāli studies.
